Teeth whitening or teeth bleaching can be defined as the whitening or lightening of a single tooth or multiple teeth through the application of chemical agents. Teeth whitening is the most commonly requested cosmetic dentistry procedure, and is one of the most straightforward ways to give you a whiter and brighter smile.

Tooth discoloration may have many causes. The most common include aging and consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea or tobacco. During tooth formation, consumption of tetracycline, certain antibiotics, or excessive fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration.

Anyone can benefit from teeth whitening. However, treatment may not be as effective for some as it is for others. Upon oral examination, our dentist can determine if you are a candidate for this procedure, including a shade assessment. Having a beautiful smile may be even easier than you think. 

There are several methods to whiten teeth:

- at our dental practice we use either the Zoom whitening (laser) bleaching performed in the surgery



- or the 'at home ' method using custom made bleaching trays and bleaching gel over 2 weeks. 

A thorough dental check-up including X-rays is essential in order to eliminate the possibility of dental caries, gingivitis , periodontal disease and to identify any sensitive teeth . In most cases you will need to have a scale and polish 1-2 weeks before the bleaching to remove tartare and superficial stains, and to give the gums a chance to heal if you have gingivitis.

Teeth whitening systems are selected at our clinic individually as each of them may have contraindications. During the initial consultation, the patient is suggested a variant of whitening which shall match his/her teeth most. 

Contraindications to whitening:

• pregnancy;

• allergy to the components of whitening solutions;

• complex cavities of hard tooth tissues;

• various diseases of parodentium tissues;

• many filled teeth;

• acting orthodontic treatment (braces, etc);

• erosions and wedge-shaped defects of hard tooth tissues due to enamel hypersensitivity.

 

After carrying out of teeth whitening it is not recommended to take meals consisting of bright dyes (wine, coffee, strong tea, uncooked carrot or beet, blueberry, blackberry, mulberry). Smoking also makes for rapid loss of the teeth whiteness.
